What is the main function of the centrifuge?

1. A centrifuge is a machine that uses centrifugal force to separate components from liquid and solid particles or a mixture of liquid and liquid.

2. The centrifuge is mainly used to separate solid particles and liquids in suspension; or to separate two immiscible liquids with different densities in emulsions (such as separating cream from milk); it can also be used It is used to remove liquids in wet solids, such as drying wet clothes with a washing machine; special overspeed tube separators can also separate gas mixtures of different densities; using the characteristics of different densities or particle sizes of solid particles in liquids with different settling speeds, there are The decanter centrifuge can also classify solid particles by density or particle size.

How to choose the right centrifuge?

1. A centrifuge has a cylinder that rotates at high speed around its axis, called a bowl, usually driven by an electric motor. After the suspension (or emulsion) is added to the drum, it is rapidly driven to rotate at the same speed as the drum, and the components are separated and discharged separately under the action of centrifugal force. In general, the higher the drum speed, the better the separation effect.

2. The working principle of the centrifugal separator is centrifugal filtration and centrifugal sedimentation. Centrifugal filtration is to make the centrifugal pressure generated by the suspension under the centrifugal force field to act on the filter medium, so that the liquid passes through the filter medium to become filtrate, and the solid particles are trapped on the surface of the filter medium, thereby realizing liquid-solid separation; centrifugal sedimentation is the use of Liquid-solid (or liquid-liquid) separation is achieved by the principle of rapid sedimentation and stratification of components with different densities of suspensions (or emulsions) in a centrifugal force field.

3. There is also a type of separator for experimental analysis, which can be used for liquid clarification and solid particle enrichment, or liquid-liquid separation. This type of separator has different structural types operating under normal pressure, vacuum and freezing conditions.

4. An important indicator to measure the separation performance of a centrifuge is the separation factor. It represents the ratio of the centrifugal force to the gravity of the material to be separated in the drum. The larger the separation factor, the faster the separation and the better the separation effect. The separation factor of industrial centrifugal separators is generally 100 to 20,000, the separation factor of ultra-speed tube separators can be as high as 62,000, and the separation factor of analytical ultra-speed separators can be as high as 610,000. Another factor that determines the processing capacity of the centrifugal separator is the working area of the drum. The larger the working area, the larger the processing capacity.

5. The selection of the centrifuge must be based on the size and concentration of the solid particles in the suspension (or emulsion), the density difference between the solid and the liquid (or two liquids), the viscosity of the liquid, the characteristics of the filter residue (or sediment), and the characteristics of the separation. Comprehensive analysis of the requirements, etc., to meet the requirements for the moisture content of the filter residue (sediment) and the clarity of the filtrate (separate liquid), and which type of centrifugal separator to use is preliminarily selected. Then, according to the processing capacity and the automation requirements for the operation, the type and specification of the centrifuge are determined, and finally verified by the actual test.

Generally, for suspensions containing particles with a particle size greater than 0.01 mm, a filter centrifuge can be used; for small or compressible particles in the suspension, a decanter centrifuge should be used; When the liquid clarity is required to be high, a separator should be used.
